The predecessor of Ton Duc Thang University (Ton Duc Thang University: TDTU) is Ton Duc Thang Private University of Technology, established under Decision 787/TTg-QD dated September 24, 1997 of the Prime Minister.

2003
On January 28, 2003, the Prime Minister issued Decision No. 18/2003/TTg-QD on converting the legal entity and renaming Ton Duc Thang Private University of Technology into Ton Duc Thang Semi-Public University.

2008
On June 11, 2008, the Prime Minister issued Decision No. 747/TTg-QD renaming Ton Duc Thang Semi-Public University to Ton Duc Thang University and transferred it to the Vietnam General Confederation of Labor.

2015
On January 29, 2015, in Decision No. 158/QD-TTg, the Prime Minister approved the pilot project to renew the operation mechanism of Ton Duc Thang University in the period 2015-2017.
